"You’re next!" This was the emphatic message shared by Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, the captain of the Gold Coast Titans, as he reached out to rookie sensation Cooper Bai. After recently committing to the Titans for the foreseeable future, Fa’asuamaleaui's words resonate with both encouragement and a hint of challenge.
Initially, it seemed like the Titans faced a difficult task in retaining the promising young player, who appeared to be leaning towards signing with the Melbourne Storm. However, the Titans have successfully intervened, initiating discussions to extend Bai’s contract and keep him on board.
Bai made a remarkable impression during his debut in Round 27 of the NRL last year, almost scoring on just his second touch—though that moment was ultimately ruled out by the video referee. With Fa’asuamaleaui’s recent commitment to the club until the end of 2030, there is a palpable sense of optimism amongst fans about the team's potential for success in the coming years.
With his own future secured, Fa’asuamaleaui is now focusing on encouraging Bai to remain with the Titans. He has taken on a mentorship role, speaking with Bai regularly and offering support. "As a friend and leader, it’s my responsibility to be there for the boys, especially if they’re feeling down or need someone to talk to," Fa’asuamaleaui explained during a media conference. "Just today, I told him, 'Mate, you're next.' Hopefully, that will motivate him, but he has to consider all his options carefully."
The possibilities are endless for Bai, who has already begun to showcase his potential, having represented Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Championships. Fa’asuamaleaui has pledged to back him no matter what decision he makes regarding his career.
"Cooper is a good kid," Fa’asuamaleaui shared. "Since we met, he has set a standard that is quite impressive for someone his age. I genuinely hope to build something special with him at the Titans, considering he’s still so young."
Both players share a common experience of being highly sought after in their early careers, and Fa’asuamaleaui is keen to help Bai navigate the complexities of contract negotiations. "I remember going through something similar when I was younger, so I’ll support him in making his own choices. I hope he decides to stay, as he could really help create something great here," he added.
Fa’asuamaleaui continues to maintain a supportive relationship with Bai, being readily available for any questions or conversations he might need.
Despite facing a challenging mandatory 11-day stand down due to a recent car accident, Bai is expected to play in the upcoming Pre-season Challenge. As the season approaches, the Titans organization remains hopeful about the future, with both young talents poised to make their mark.
