The poster for ‘The Mortuary Assistant’ invites you to confront the eerie world of the deceased in a way that’s both captivating and unsettling.
Drawing inspiration from the acclaimed horror video game, this film adaptation is set to hit theaters on February 13, distributed by Epic Pictures, before becoming available for streaming on Shudder starting March 27.
The storyline centers around Rebecca Owens, a newly licensed mortician who takes on a challenging night shift at a funeral home, where she finds herself embalming bodies in solitude after hours. As unsettling occurrences begin to intensify, Rebecca discovers hidden demonic rituals, the sinister past of her mysterious mentor, and her own repressed traumas. This culminates in a frantic race to survive the night while preventing her body from becoming a vessel for a malevolent possession.
Starring Willa Holland, known for her role in “Arrow,” alongside Paul Sparks from “Boardwalk Empire,” the cast also features John Adams (Hellbender), Keena Ferguson, and Mark Steger, recognizable for his role in “Stranger Things,” who plays the character known as The Mimic.
Jeremiah Kipp, who directed ‘Slapface,’ helms this project, working from a screenplay crafted by Brian Clarke, the original creator of The Mortuary Assistant, alongside Tracee Beebe.
Initially launched on PC in 2022, The Mortuary Assistant quickly gained popularity, becoming a viral phenomenon before making its way to consoles such as Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. This film aims to expand upon the game's universe, offering a deeper exploration into the lore surrounding the demonic forces that haunt River Fields.
Produced by Patrick Ewald’s Epic Pictures in collaboration with Dread, alongside Cole Payne’s Traverse Media and Jacob P. Heineke, the film’s executive production team includes notable names such as Clarke, Katie Page, Yulissa Morales, Randy Sinquefield, Patrick Fischer, and Oliver Garboe.
