A heated debate has erupted in France over the potential imposition of tariffs on Chinese imports, with the country's finance minister, Roland Lescure, urging a cautious and strategic approach. This comes amid calls for a substantial 30% duty on all goods from China entering the European Union.
Lescure highlighted the significant trade surplus China enjoys with Europe, describing it as an "unsustainable" situation. He emphasized the need for a tailored response, stating that a blanket tariff approach would not be effective. Paris, he said, is committed to engaging with Beijing to bring about necessary changes.
According to Lescure, Beijing is aware of the economic imbalances in China, which heavily relies on exports and investment. He referenced China's pledge to shift towards domestic consumption, but expressed skepticism, stating, "They've been saying the right things, but the numbers don't show it's happening yet. There's been a lot of talk, but not much action."
Lescure proposed a multi-pronged strategy for France and Europe to address the trade imbalance. This includes targeted tariffs to tackle instances of unfair competition, as well as policies to enhance Europe's savings rate, innovation, and competitiveness.
"Paris is ready to do its part in rebalancing trade," Lescure asserted.
Coincidentally, on the same day, France's High Commission for Strategy and Planning released a report detailing the threat China poses to European industries. The report recommended either a 30% tariff on all Chinese goods or a significant depreciation of the euro against the yuan, ranging from 20% to 30%, to protect local producers.
