In a shocking turn of events, a renowned journalist has been arrested by federal agents, sparking a fierce debate over press freedom and the limits of protest. But here’s where it gets controversial: former CNN anchor Don Lemon was taken into custody in Los Angeles, accused of violating federal law during a protest at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Is this a legitimate crackdown on unlawful behavior, or a dangerous attack on the First Amendment?
According to a statement from Lemon’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, posted on his social media account Friday morning, Lemon was arrested while covering the upcoming Grammy Awards. Lowell emphasized, “Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done. The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine a light on the truth and hold those in power accountable.”
The arrests stem from a January 18 protest at Cities Church in St. Paul, where anti-ICE demonstrators disrupted a Sunday service. The church was targeted because an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer reportedly serves as its pastor. During the protest, demonstrators chanted “ICE out!” and called out the name of Renee Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen fatally shot by federal immigration agents earlier that month. Lemon and other journalists, including independent reporter Georgia Fort, were on the scene documenting the event and interviewing congregants.
But this is the part most people miss: Lemon, 59, faces charges of Conspiracy to Deprive Rights, Violation of the FACE Act, and interfering with someone’s First Amendment rights. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrests on social media, stating, “At my direction, federal agents arrested Don Lemon, Trahern Jeen Crews, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lydell Lundy in connection with the coordinated attack on Cities Church.” Bondi later labeled Lemon “an online agitator” on Fox News, declaring, “If you protested and went into that church and terrorized the parishioners, we are coming after you.”
Lemon’s attorney fired back, calling the arrest “an unprecedented attack on the First Amendment” and accusing the Trump administration of diverting attention from “the many crises facing this administration.” Fort, meanwhile, posted a Facebook video as agents arrived at her door, calling the case “a violation of my constitutional rights.” She insisted, “I was there as a journalist, documenting the protest. How can we have a Constitution if being a member of the press makes you a target?”
The legal battle has been fraught with controversy. While senior Trump officials initially sought to charge eight individuals, a federal magistrate judge in Minnesota approved charges against only three, citing insufficient evidence of conspiracy. The Justice Department’s subsequent attempt to force the judge to issue arrest warrants for Lemon and four others was denied. Is this a case of selective prosecution, or a necessary enforcement of the law?
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass weighed in, calling Lemon “an internationally renowned journalist and friend” and condemning his arrest as “an escalation” by the Trump administration. “President Trump is not de-escalating anything after the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens by federal agents,” Bass stated. “He is escalating.”
