The US retail giant Costco is reportedly targeting Hobart for its first store in Tasmania, marking a significant strategic shift in its expansion across Australia. This move comes as the company plans to open two new locations in Victoria and Western Australia, while actively seeking sites in North and South Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide.
But the planned debut in Tasmania and Geelong is what could truly revolutionize the market. Costco's expansion is fueled by its stellar financial performance, with the company posting a half-billion dollars in profit after tax last financial year, surpassing rival Aldi's $499.2 million.
Retail expert Gary Mortimer suggests that Costco is playing a calculated long game to capture a larger share of the Australian grocery market. He states, 'They are playing the long game. Costco is a large-format business that requires significant space and land.'
The appeal of Costco for shoppers is straightforward: bulk buying leads to substantial savings. Tasmanians have long been envious of mainland shoppers' access to these benefits. In response to this, Tasmanian Greens senator Nick McKim pledged to invest $30 million to attract retailers like Aldi and Costco to the state as part of an election pitch.
McKim argues that Coles and Woolworths have dominated the market for too long, resulting in Tasmanians paying higher prices for essential groceries. He claims that a lack of competition means shoppers in Tasmania pay at least $15 more for a basket of essential groceries compared to Aldi, which translates to hundreds of dollars annually.
However, Aldi has stated that it has no plans to expand into Tasmania, leaving the door open for Costco's potential arrival.
