In a move that has certainly caught attention, Arsenal FC has officially confirmed the transfer of Oleksandr Zinchenko, as the Ukrainian defender departs for Ajax just before the transfer window closes. But here's where it gets controversial… many fans wonder what this means for Arsenal's squad depth and future plans.
Zinchenko, who plays as a left-back, had been engaged in negotiations with Ajax for several weeks. Over the weekend, he traveled to Amsterdam to finalize his contract and go through the necessary medical checks. The agreement has now been publicly announced, with Zinchenko ending a challenging loan spell at Nottingham Forest early to join the Dutch club permanently. The transfer is reported to be a modest deal for Arsenal—around €1.5 million (roughly £1.2 million)—with added bonuses tied to Champions League participation.
The 29-year-old player has committed to a short-term contract at Johan Cruyff Arena that lasts until the end of the season. Fans could potentially see Zinchenko make his debut next weekend, when Ajax, currently in fourth place in the Eredivisie, hosts AZ Alkmaar. It’s worth noting that Ajax's recent form includes a 2-2 draw with Excelsior on Sunday, leaving them 18 points behind the league leaders, PSV Eindhoven.
In the interim, Fred Grim remains in charge at Ajax as caretaker manager until the summer, following the dismissal of John Heitinga last November—who, interestingly, is now an assistant coach at Tottenham. Heitinga’s brief tenure lasted only five months.
Zinchenko's move to Ajax also brings him back into familiar territory, as he will be reunited with Takehiro Tomiyasu, who joined Ajax on loan until the end of the season in December. This move came shortly after Zinchenko’s own Arsenal contract was terminated earlier than planned, opening the door for his transfer.
Marijn Beuker, Ajax's director of football, expressed his enthusiasm: “With Oleksandr, we are bringing in an experienced player who strengthens our squad immediately, especially as we pursue Champions League qualification. His tactical understanding and defensive reliability are a perfect fit for our style of play.
